I am of the opinion that if you choose not to vote, then by default you voted for who ever won, because you didn't vote against them.

Also at least at the state level you can see people voting on expanding obamacare and passing marriage equality. So there is that.

Voting on local and state issues is super important. And those local elections matter too as those people are the ones who go on to national offices.

It's been said that a non vote is a vote for the incumbent

Absolutely. If you don't vote for the opponent, you are contributing to the incumbent staying in office.

I thought of another way in which all votes aren't equal: the primaries.

If you live in a state that votes early, your vote matters a whole lot more than if you live in a state that votes later. For the later states, the race is often already decided by the time you get to cast your vote. Your preferred candidate(s) may have already dropped out of the race.

I really wish they would reform the primary system to eliminate that issue. Have a national primary where everyone votes on the same day. Then have a run-off for the top 2 or 3 vote recipients because with a large field, there may not be any clear winner. At least that would let everyone's vote count because it sure doesn't now.

this also sucks as well. I agree it should all be on the same day.
