I don't have a ton of jewelry but recently received an heirloom ring from my husband's family on our wedding day. It seems to be worth a bit and when I was at the jeweler to get it resized they asked if I'd like to have it appraised. It was $100 so I passed on it for the time being... but wanted to know what the benefit of that is? Have any of you had jewelry appraised? Is it mostly for insurance purposes?

Should you have your jewelry appraised?

It is for insurance purposes. I really can't think of any other reason unless I was looking to sell something and wanted an independent assessment of it's value.Steve
* Despite the high cost of living, it remains very popular.
* Why should I pay for my daughter's education when she already knows everything?
* There are no shortcuts to anywhere worth going.

I guess the other reason would be if you weren't sure if an item was real. I've seen plenty of times on Antique Roadshow where someone was shocked to find out that some item they had for years was actually very valuable.Steve
