In spring I bought 13 bales of (old) hay for my urban gardens. I was planning to buy more, but when the midwestern drought was clearly setting in I decided to let first dibs go to people who were feeding animals.
Normally Craigslist is full of hay sale ads, but now there are only ads for people wanting to *buy*. I doubt anyone has mowed hay since the end of May.
I don't have animals, but I wonder what people are going to do? Grain based feed prices will be up and hay not much available either.
In the drought of 1988 a lot of states let farmers mow the highway easments for hay. I haven't heard of that yet, but the highway sides look sparse anyway.
Is this hurting anyone here?
