I think that they are both empty suits, but I am voting for McCain as a vote against Obama. I don't agree with Obama's views on energy, taxes, foreign policy, or abortion.

tifnglen: I would hope not. Anyone who agrees with a party 100% of the time is probably fooling themselves.
Also I think it's easy to paint people as socialists or capitalist pigs or whatever, but there really isn't a big difference between what the Republicans want and what the Democrats want. A few percentage points in the tax rate at the upper brackets, for example, really isn't going to make a big difference.
One of the big topics for me is energy. My opinion is that the Democratic agenda trumps the Republican agenda here. The Republicans' solution is to give more tax breaks to the uber-profitable oil companies and open up more sites for drilling. Great, that will give us some more oil and drop prices a bit for a few years. But then what... we'll be back to the same spot we were before. (And perhaps make things worse since consumption will rise again in the short term.)
We need to take big action now on alternative energy sources. This is an area we can be leader in for the next 10 years. We wouldn't be captive to the whims of the middle east, we wouldn't be indirectly funding terrorists, we would increase our standard of living in the long run, and we'd get the added benefit of a cleaner, healthier environment. This is the kind of "big idea" I can get on board with.

From the associated press....
"Sen. Obama has said that expanding our nuclear power plants 'doesn't make sense for America.' He also says no to nuclear storage and reprocessing. I couldn't disagree more. I have proposed a plan to build additional nuclear plants. That means new jobs, and that means new energy. If we want to enable the technologies of tomorrow like plug-in electric cars, we need electricity to plug into," McCain said at the Enrico Fermi Nuclear Plant.
"Now, nuclear power alone is not enough. Drilling alone is not enough. We need to do all this and more. That is why I am calling for an 'all of the above' approach." Like Obama, McCain has multibillion-dollar, long-term plans to reduce oil imports.
Obama voted for a 2005 energy bill backed by Bush that included billions in subsidies for oil and natural gas production, a measure Cheney played a major role in developing. McCain opposed the bill on grounds it included billions in unnecessary tax breaks for the oil industry.
Sounds like he wants us to use everything we can to deal with the future energy needs.
Here is a speech he gave recently...
John McCain 2008 - John McCain for President
He is for alternative energy, he is for clean coal, nat gas, nuke power, oil in the short term...
His plan is very practical. He seems to understand that solar and wind are all well and good for the future, but we still need a "bridge" to get us there.
He is for plug in electric cars...which I think are the bees knees.

I'm about 25% for McCain.
Now, my mother and her new husband are very excited about Obama.
I'm guessing they are nearly 100% for Obama.
They feel we should be migrating towards a socialist govt. (their words) and they think Obama is the man to get us there. They think we are behind the times and need to be more like europe.
very scary stuff....

This is where I wish Dems and Reps could work together to get whoever is in office, to get us energy self-sufficient in the shortest amount of time. If the people were rising up mad and stayed mad, it would get done.
I want the world to know that we are serious and are not going to stop until we succeed.

I'm voting McCain. I don't care for either candidate, but I really don't care for Obama. I'd love to vote for Barr, but I'm afraid that would be putting Obama in. I feel McCain will not increase the size of government. It has been shown in studies gone by that an increase in government and a decrease in personal accountability will destroy nations (Google Edward Gibbon, for example).
BTW, I believe any current president reaps what the preceding president worked for.
Ultimately, I wish we could get the Fair Tax passed.
Random thoughts.

I was going to say perhaps you should slow down on the attacks or the thread would get shut down...

We should study our history and understand how the rest of the world works so that we can have a clear understanding of what makes this country so great. There is a reason we are THE superpower and the greatest country in the world.
Anything that moves us away from the characteristics that make us so great....is bad
