How often do creditors follow through if you dispute a small debt (in the range of $100-300)? They clearly cannot take every debtor to a court, or do they?

Do you mean if you dispute it with your CC company? If so, I think the company then investigates and hopefully rules in your favor. At that point, the matter is closed. If the company rules that the debt is legit then you need to pay it.

If your cc company rules in your favor be aware that whoever you did business with could still sue you to pay them another way. Not likely to happen over $300 but still could happen.
