No one will ever spend your money as well and efficiently as you will. And the government is the prime example of spending someone else's money.

If the government is going to pay for peoples higher education what is the return on that investment? If it cost the tax payer $50,000 per student, is the government will have to receive at least $65,000 over the working life just to break even (assuming 5% interest rate).

And does this government funded education include housing, meals, & living expenses?

And where are we going to build these schools. I'm guessing at an average, each state has two or three large universities and another couple dozen community colleges.

And can anyone get a degree any anything they want? We can spend a lot of money to educate people on Western Trout Fishing, but just because you have that degree we'll now what?

If you want a good solution, expand on the military's education programs. Serve the country for a couple of years and that will pay your education.

I don't get why trade schools aren't free and can't accept more students? And why jobs in places in longshoremen are so difficult to get?

My take is that investing in education might not give an immediate ROI, but think about the long-term benefits like a more skilled workforce, innovation, and so on.
