  • 5 grain cereal - recipe?

I bought some of the Bob's Red Mill 5 Grain got cereal and love it. So now I'm wondering - can I just buy different grains in bulk, mix them together and cook them up for the same result? Or is there some magic proportion to be aware of when it comes to mixing grains?

This was one of my bread thrift store finds and hence fairly inexpensive, but to be able to buy the grains in bulk (which I can) might be a good way to go down the road.

Re: 5 grain cereal - recipe?

Bob's Red Mill says the ingredients in their 5 Grain Cereal are "rolled whole wheat, rye, oats, flaxseed, barley, and triticale." Ingredients are typically listed in order of quantity by weight (ie whatever a recipe has most of by weight will be listed first), if that helps. The nice thing is that if you mix up a batch, you can adjust it here and there until it is to your taste - its pretty flexible. Just be sure that you write down everything you do so that you can duplicate it!

You could also try the Hillbilly Housewife recipe for 5-grain cereal, although it's different from the Bob's Red Mill - http://www.hillbillyhousewife.com/5graincereal.htm

My health food store carries 5 and 7 grain cereals pre-mixed in the bulk bins. This could also be an option, if you've got a good selection of bulk bins around.

My new favorite breakfast. This is a hot cereal, made with oats, barley and 3 other grains (sorry the container is downstairs and I'm too lazy to go look at it) which is absolutely delicious. Bought it the other day - the grains are flaked, like oats, cook in about two minutes and is really really good. Just thought I'd share. And someone knows better breakfast, kinda share the recipe....!

          Five Grain Hot Cereal
          1 cup dry oatmeal
          1/2 cup quick barley
          1/2 cup dry brown rice
          1/2 cup whole wheat flour
          1/2 cup cornmeal

You need a blender to make this recipe. Get out your blender. Measure the dry oatmeal into it. Whirl the oatmeal until it is powdery, like flour. Dump the oatmeal into a mixing bowl. Measure the barley into the blender. Process it until powdery. Dump it into the bowl with the oatmeal. Measure the brown rice into the blender. Process it until powdery. The rice will take longer processing than the oatmeal or barley. It will be a tiny bit coarser after blending too, that is alright. When it is as powdery as you can get it, dump it into the bowl with the other grains. Add the whole wheat flour and the cornmeal. Stir the mixture up to combine it thoroughly. Transfer the mixture to a resealable container and label. Store on the pantry shelf. Makes 3 cups.

You should be able to add other grains of your choice. This gives you some guidance as to amounts and how to process.

I sometimes have sprouted grains and cereals for breakfast as this is a very healthy food. One can also combine several grains together and create a new recipe.

I've wondered about buying grains in bulk and making my own cereals too but any time I've tried it (on a small scale, just to test out recipes) it hasn't worked out well for me at all. It just doesn't taste half as good. Maybe I'm just not getting the quantities right...I might try out some of these suggestions and see if it makes any difference!

Quick, healthy & cheap recipe: Make your own cereal!

Make your own hot cereal for breakfast:

First, mix your grains. Whatever ones you want. Go ahead. Do it!! And be brave!

oats (great to help increase milk supply, breastfeeding moms!)
                        steel cut oats
                        oat bran
                        wheat bran
                        triticale
                        millet
                        buckwheat
                        bulgur
                        couscous
                        brown rice
                        amaranth
quinoa (rinse first, quinoa is bitter!)
                        wheat germ
                        barley
                        rye
                        corn meal
                        cracked wheat

Once you have decided on your own combination, you can then grind them, if you choose. Again, you don't have to. I grind my grains about 25% of the time. The other 75% of the time I am lazy.

Next, soak them overnight in warm water and an acidic medium (some people put them in the crockpot overnight, so it's ready to eat in the morning). Of course this step isn't necessary, but it will reduce your cooking and therefore stirring and chaance-of-burning time drastically.

1/2 Cup dry grains mix, soaking in whey and water
In the morning, you can begin cooking in either water or milk right away.

                        Good morning, grains!
Once cooked, well, this is the fun part! Add all the yummy toppings!

                        Sweeteners:
                        honey
                        molasses
                        sugar
                        agave nectar
                        sucanat
                        maple syrup
                        fruit
                        stevia

                        Toppings:
                        ground flax seed
                        wheat germ
                        dried and fresh fruits
                        sunflower seeds
                        milk, cream, half &half
                        nuts
brewer's yeast (another one that helps milk supply)
                        cinnamon

Five-Grain Cereal with Apricots, Apples, and Bananas

Store this dry cereal in a zip-top plastic bag in the freezer to keep it fresh. To make the cereal a batch at a time, add 1/2 cup dry cereal mix to 1 1/2 cups boiling water for each serving.

                          Ingredients

                          1/3 cup flaxseed
                          1 1/4 cups steel-cut (Irish) oats
2/3 cup dried apricots, coarsely chopped
2/3 cup dried apple, coarsely chopped
                          2/3 cup dried banana chips
                          1/2 cup cracked wheat
                          1/2 cup uncooked regular grits
                          1/2 cup oat bran
                          1/3 cup wheat bran
                          3/4 teaspoon salt
                          13 1/2 cups water

                          How to Make It

Place flaxseed in a spice or coffee grinder; process until coarsely ground. Combine flaxseed, oats, and remaining ingredients except water in a large bowl, stirring well to combine.

Bring water to a boil in a large saucepan. Add cereal; cover, reduce heat, and simmer 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. Uncover and cook 2 minutes or until thick, stirring constantly. Serve immediately.
