I'm trying to take one day and go to a couple of stores. I have a large chain grocery store that is 4/10's of a mile away. I find that the less that I do go and shop, the less that I spend. So, I try to stay out of the stores unless it is for perishables, or sales that come out for only a couple of days.
We go about three times a week. We don't plan menus anymore and sort of wing it by what needs to be eaten. Since it is just the two of us, our bill is way down, but we waste more if we go less often and buy more stuff.
Does that make sense?? Last month food total was $253 and eating out was about $44.00. We were in NC for 8 days though and I didn't include our food there in our totals, that was in a different category "family fun".
DH does about 99% of the shopping. Last Sunday he found spiral hams at Costco for 97 cents a pound, so we had several meals with that.
I bulk shop once a month. I make milk runs about every 2 weeks if I can get the milk with far out dates. (During the winter I forego the milk runs and buy it all in 1 trip and freeze).
However, if I have to go to the city anyway, I check the ads and see if I need something on sale. But, I normally will not make a special trip for it.
I usually check the ads and go to the stores where I found something on a good sale. If nothing on sale, I buy only milk that week, and whatever else we need, usually produce, eggs, juice.
So my weekly spending might be anywhere between $10 and $70. Whatever I underspend or overspend rolls over to the next week. I try to make sure it averages $50/week.
i go (usually) every sunday for growers market (fresh fruit and veges, honey, nuts) and then a quick stop at the supermarket for a few thing. Sometimes I do a weekly shop at the supermarket, other times I do about three or four small shops in a week. It's on the way home from work - so no extra cost for petrol, and I am fine with just buying what I need - I normally don't get any extra items.
In the last year, I have started to go once a week, and I try not to forget anything. Saves so much time! I plan for 5-6 dinners/lunch(leftovers), make a list of what I need, and try too prepare what I can immediately when I get back to save time on weekday nights.
I usually make 2 stops, for example the fruit & veggie stop at a specialized store where I can get good quality, and a regular grocery store for the few meats & processed/canned stuff we have. Some others weeks, I go to an ethnic place a bit further which is "1 stop", and I then buy those little special spices, sauces, breads, ....
