Ours just jumped up to $4.29.

A year ago (I found an old receipt) I paid $3.19 for the same brand of milk.

This is why I have been cooking with powered milk.

I was actually just researching this since I never understand why people say powdered milk is cheaper. Just came across a site that said the price of dry milk had recently spiked higher than the cost of fresh so that may be it. Here that 2 gallons in dry milk costs closer to $9. Must be because cows are raised in Colorado, all I can think of.

Don't buy fresh milk. I only buy canned milk for cooking and powdered milk for cooking, so I don't know the fresh gallon prices.

Best price on canned is $0.63, and a can dilutes to 3 cups. Since there are 16 cups in a gallon, that works out to $3.36 per gallon.

I don't know how much we paid for the dry milk back in August, so I can't calculate that.

If I buy fresh milk again, it will most likely be for yogurt making. One still comes out ahead making yogurt from fresh milk as opposed to buying it at the grocery.

I think two years ago there was ta thread on this, and the price I paid was almost 5$!!! currently it fluctuates between $2.50 and $3 at BJS for 2%...The grocery stores run 50 cents to a dollar more.

Oh I wish, I buy 2 gallons every 2 weeks but the most common size of dry milk (aka not going out of my way to find it) costs $7.53 and makes only 1 1/2 gallons. I think the actual price of dry and fresh are equal in my area (if you can find the dry in bulk sizes, usually not) but the fresh is always on sale so it comes out cheaper.

That's interesting. The most common size here makes 2 gallons. I don't think I've ever seen a 1 1/2 gallon box.

A long time ago the savings in using powdered milk used to be significant. I agree with you that it usually saves little anymore. The price relative to fresh has risen.

I use dry milk in recipes for making my own bulk, ready-to-go mixes for cornbread, waffles, pancakes, biscuits, breadmaker, and hot cocoa. Savings are made when putting these ingredients together as compared to buying the convenience mixes in the store, and I still get convenience at the ready.

I buy whole milk and mix it with half water to get an approximate 2% milk. The taste is indistinguishable from 2%. I mix it at the time of use.

In the city where I live, in the gas station it costs $4.99, in grocery stores it costs $2.60
