  • Milk Question

I had to freeze a gallon of milk last week or it would have expired before we could use it. Does anyone know how long it takes for it to thaw out in the fridge? 24 hours? 48 hours?

Well, nobody answered this but I figured I'd post the outcome anyway. It takes 96 hours or 4 days for the milk to thaw out in the fridge.

perhaps it would be easier if you poured in into 2 cup containers and froze that way? then you could just thaw out a bit at a time.

I think that time could depend on where in your frig you put it and what temps you keep your frig set at.

At any rate - a long time! I freeze buttermilk alot as I use it for only one cake recipe which I don't make all that often. I just know to set it down in the frig a couple of days early in order to bake w/it.

I don't know what to tell ya. We drink gallons and gallons of milk every week. Never had to freeze any. I would just throw it out and try to buy less.

Huh, now freezing in smaller portions I hadn't thought of, we once well twice, had to get rid of some due to a last minute trip for a funeral, if I had thoght to freeze in smaller portions I could have fit it in the freezer, and might have been able to use it...

does it taste funny after? should I reserve it for cooking if another occasion should arise?

I don't think the thawed frozen milk tastes bad at all, MHO though.
