  • Pretty and Frugal Gift Wrap Ideas

    By Abigail Beal

Sometimes gift wrapping can be so expensive -- once you’ve bought the paper, tissue and the card you’ve spent just as much as you did on the gift. Here are some pretty and frugal gift wrap ideas to help you save more so you can spend more on your gifts and your loved ones.

When saving money on gift wrapping materials the most important thing to keep in mind is your own needs -- and everyone’s needs are different. Think of what type of occasions are likely to come up during this year. If three of your friends are now pregnant, you are likely to go to three baby showers in the near future. If two other friends have engagement rings on their fingers, you will probably be invited to bridal showers and also a wedding within the next year. You can’t plan for everything life has in store for you -- but try to look at what is a strong possibility and plan for that.

The next thing to keep in mind is your style. If you are a crafty person that likes to make things you may be happiest buying supplies where you need to create some of your gift wrapping materials. But if you are not a crafty person at all and you just want to wrap your gifts and make them look pretty, focus on finding pre-made gift wrapping materials. There’s no reason to re-invent the wheel and it is really apples vs. oranges if you make your own gift cards or buy them -- you are probably spending about the same amount of money.

A great place to go is The Dollar Store. There is one in most communities and usually they carry gift wrap. Sometimes gift wrapping paper can be two rolls for one dollar and other times it can be one roll for one dollar (depends on the store). The Dollar Store is also a great location for other basic gift wrapping items such as tissue, tape, scissors and even traditional cards. The key to buying gift wrapping paper and cards at any dollar store is to try to plan ahead for special occasions and holidays that will occur within the next six months to a year -- because stock at every dollar store changes over quickly and it may not be there in a month or so.

Consider gift wrapping your item in non-traditional paper. There are so many different kinds of paper out there that we use in our daily lives that are attractive. You can use something fun like the Sunday paper comics or even the crossword section for someone who likes good puzzles. A musician or composer would appreciate a gift wrapped in music sheets; these can be found at any music store. For a very artistic look try wrapping your gift using magazine pages -- such as from a high fashion magazine or even a scientific discovery magazine. A gift wrapped in National Geographic Magazine pages would be perfect for someone who cares about animals and the environment. For someone who is learning a foreign language, wrap their gift in a newspaper or magazine of that language -- you can find this at a large bookstore or even an airport. Try to match the gift wrapping paper style to the tastes of the person that you are giving the gift to.

We all know that the day after every holiday, the gift wrapping paper goes on sale. This is a wonderful time to stock up but do so in a reasonable fashion. Look for gift wrapping paper that you can use year-round because even if you do hold the gift wrapping roll for a year, chances are you are going to want to use several gift wrap rolls for a large holiday or occasion. Your best bet at after holiday sales are solid colors and patterns that you and your friends like. Everyone’s tastes are different -- so for one home that would just love polka dots, another home would really love to use a roll of paper that had a plaid pattern. If the pattern or color on the gift wrap roll doesn’t appeal to you, don’t buy it, even if it is on sale, there is just too much gift wrapping paper out there. Also remember if you are shopping at a chain store to visit the chain stores that get less traffic because they will have more of a variety of gift wrapping paper. Store your gift wrapping paper in a sensible place, somewhere cool and dry and where you will be able to find it easily like a coat closet. This is probably one of the top ways to save money on gift wrapping, and it works like a charm.

Another choice is to consider using very basic craft white or brown paper and then to add some fancy finishes to this. Add a large bow and a nice card. Or take a rubber stamp and stamp a design on it. Do something that is easily when you are doing this and do something that comes naturally. If it is Christmas then buy some inexpensive Christmas ornaments and tie one on each package with the ribbon. If it is springtime, pick some flowers and tuck them under the ribbon to show spring’s bounty. This will make your gift look very special, but it is still keeping your gift wrapping very frugal.

With a little planning and some creativity you can easily find inexpensive ways to wrap gifts for any holiday. Happy wrapping!

dollar tree is my fave and they have it all one whole isle both side of decorative wrapping needs, from bdays juvi and adult, over the hill, anniversarys, weddings and showers of all kinds, heck ours has the little swans for place settings too. they have the diaper game i saw last time i was there too. all kinds of gr8 stuff, barbie and nascar arrangements, normally like 5.96 at walmart, ONE DOLLAR!~lol. thats 5 more items you can buy for the same cost plus 4 cents.
i love dollar store gifts! nothing is better then a gift that keeps on giving. a basket with soaps, cleaners, wash cloths and food items, these are things i wont have to find time to go and buy and need on a daily basis. or another gr8 item for me, is a friend or relative finds terrycloth on sale at the 88 cent bin at wally world and buys me a few yards. thats the best gift of all! ill make a bath sheet a hand towel and 2 wash cloths with that. seems like not much made, but im six foot tall and 200 lbs. so the regular bath towel is just enough to wrap my almost mid back long hair.olol. and a bath sheet starting at about ten dollars, buying the cloth is far more ecconomical. and i can make it the pefect size for me. they also have 50 different balloons to chose from in ours, at one dollar each at walmart they start at 2.98 thats 3 balloons for one plus 2 cents.

I use the kids artwork, or occassionally schoolwork, I would have to spend the money on the paper and paint for them anyway (well not have to, but want to).

ONe thing DH and I do is use old maps. We have travelled a lot and have maps of about 46 of the 50 states -- a lot are very outdated and we have numerous multiples picked up at visitors centers while on the interstate. So we have started using them as gift wrap! It's really fun -- you can find a map with a funny or related town name, like Greggville for your friend Greg, or Bliss for a wedding shower gift, or one related to where they live or want to live, etc. Everyone loves it! And it gets rid of unneccessary clutter, too!

          Many ideas here!

          1. Go to the thrift store and get some old cookie tins. Fill fill fill with things.

          2. Save coffee tins, cylindrical oatmeal 'tins', even nut 'tins'. These are made of cardboard sometimes with a plastic lid. Spray or craft paint with plain white, gold, or silver. Or cover with contact paper. Glue on artificial flowers, leaves in natural groupings. These are really beautiful and are nice enough to sell.

          More later.

oh, so many things for this!!!

one of my favorites is to use the photograph side of the paper from calendars to wrap small/mid-sized gifts. i get the calendars from the dollar tree, and can wrap 12 things for $1 plus tax!

sometimes i'll find nice cloth bags, placemats, or napkins on sale and i'll bundle gifts in those. i like the fact that it's tree-free.

              Gift Tags:

Take cards from last year and cut the colorful front (which has a blank back) into tag sized pieces.

Punch a hole in one end.

Write your message on the blank side and attach with a string or ribbon.

[I don't usually even use tags mostly writing nicely right on the paper if it is solid)

I usually get doubles when I get film developed. One set immediately goes into the album, the other gets passed around for others to see-(therefore I am not nuts about people putting their fingers on the photos). So- by the years end, we usually have a bunch of photos that are just hanging around. I use them as gift tags.

For birthday cards I go to the local dollar store where you can get 2 for $1. I stock up and always have a supply in my cupboard for every birthday of the year. People always marvel at how I never forget a birthday. Thanks day planner and dollar store!

Read somewhere on a frugal site, you can use the front of cards people send you as postcards the next year...if its not already written on. Went to KMart two weeks ago and they had their Christmas stuff 90% off...got a ton of Martha Stewart cards for .16 a box, so I won't have to buy cards for the next 5 years or so...also found some other cute stuff...Walked out with 6 bags of Christmas stuff for only $20

                      fabric gift wraps

                      hi,

I think that fabric gift wraps are the most frugal, eco-friendly, and tasteful way to wrap gifts. I know they're the most useful to the person receiving the gift, but of these favors make a full circle, we'll each be receiving fabric-wrapped gifts eventually, which we can re-gift. They're easy to make from fabric leftovers I think, and you can get ideas on how to make them by searching, on the etsy website, for 'fabric gift wrap'.

Since September our grocery stores, big box stores, even auto supply stores have been promoting .99 cent re-useable tote style bags and now charge for plastic bags. Some stores give free re-useable bags when you sign for a loyalty card. In a short time we have accumulated too many bags so I am packaging the larger gifts in those re-usuable bags with red tissue paper fill. Several of these bags happen to be cheerful green so these are festive. The added benefit is that it is so easy and the recipient can use the bags for groceries or books or whatever they please.

DH is not too supportive of this idea...yet. What would your response be to getting a gift in a re-useable tote?

If the tote is pretty it would be awesome.

But if it is an ad for the store.. depends on the person (I would like it though)

Here's more ideas. I cut up old cards, too. I use them for tags, or I glue a pretty one to some plain paper, folded and cut to fit a left-over envelope. Sometimes I cut the message from a different card for the inside, or write it out in my own handwriting. In my family, we exchange cards for special occasions. If it's someone's birthday, all the cards are going to one person, we don't write on the envelope (unless it's being mailed). Then that envelope can be used for a hand made card.
Another thing I do is I glue a nice card front or calendar picture to a present wrapped in plain paper, then this gift can be mailed and there is no bow to get squashed.

not sure what I get offended about but isn't the idea of holiday card about love and cares ? whats wrong with writing on a piece of toilet paper ...

"I love you, I miss you so despite my financial troubles, I want you to know I still care ..."
