A Sad Season

December 27th, 2023 at 08:05 PM by CB in the City

I had a wonderful Christmas with my family, so I'm not bah-humbugging -- but it has also been a sad and challenging Christmas. My nephew died a week before Christmas -- complications from Type 1 diabetes. It was a shock. I knew about his disease, but had no idea he was in trouble. I went to the funeral, which was out of state, and I was glad I did, since I saw family members I hadn't seen in a while. But still, a very sad affair.
Then I learned that my sister was scammed out of...

Happy holidays!

December 26th, 2023 at 01:06 AM by Steve

I wrote a long post earlier today and when I hit submit it disappeared so I'll try to recreate it (and I'm doing it in my word processor this time just in case).

It's not quite time for the year-end wrap up post but figured I'd give some updates.

All is going pretty well. I'm finishing up my first full year of “semi-retirement”. I'm really not sure what else to call it. I went per diem in August 2022 meaning I no longer have a set schedule...

Small amounts to ESA and apple stock

December 24th, 2023 at 06:11 AM by LivingAlmostLarge

The year is ending and I just thought I'd post about college savings and how small savings adds up.  Maybe to inspire someone, maybe because it's the simplest accounts we have.  My DK1 turns 14 in January.  I think we started her Education Savings Account or Coverdell in May 2010.  But Coverdell IRA or ESA are capped at $2000 a year contribution limits.  But you can invest in anything.  What have we invested in?  VOO.   Yep that's it....

End of Year Housekeeping

December 24th, 2023 at 02:45 AM by terri77

A few this and that as the year comes to a close.
I upped my monthly IRA contribution to $575 per month, which would bring my annual contribution to $6,900 annually. I'll put in an order for $100 on January 1st to get me to $7,000.
I increased my biweekly TSP contribution to $900 which will max me out for the year at $23,000. They reduce the last paycheck's contribution automatically.
Based on tax efficiency I got out of the high dividend yield fund at Vanguard and exchanged...

Wow, I can actual post again!

December 23rd, 2023 at 07:31 PM by Rob62521

It's been a few months since I've been able to post. I went to the forum and commented and the IT person made suggestions, but nothing worked. Once a week I would come and try and it wouldn't work. So, I'm hoping this goes through.
Life has been going on. I've been busy with church things as well as getting ready for Christmas. We spent over $39 in postage for Christmas cards and I'm thinking we need to cut down our list considerably, especially to those we see often or use social...

Looking ahead to 2024 and some confusing income and tax questions

December 23rd, 2023 at 05:31 PM by PatientSaver

My friend and neighbor came over this morning to drop off a Christmas present and some cookies she baked. I gave her my present earlier, not knowing if I would see  her again before Christmas, but forgot to put the second half of my gift in the bag, so while she was here, she let me slip it in her pocket. Wonder if she'll peek.I have not done much Christmas decorating this year, but I did put out this over-the-top, festive tablecloth my Slovakian grandmother made in 1975....

Net Worth Update

December 23rd, 2023 at 04:42 PM by Monkey Mama

Our net worth was up $75K for the year, last I looked.  Anything can happen...  I only track/document on the last day of every year, so will see where we end up.
I delight in these years when spending seems a little crazy but net worth surges ahead anyway.  We've probably had more years like this since our investment gains have outpaced our contributions.  Once we hit that tipping point.
Looking closer, it is just retirement fund gains.  Everything...

Health Update

December 19th, 2023 at 06:36 PM by klarose

It has been a crazy couple weeks!
My surgery ended up getting cancelled again. I was in pre-op, with an IV and labs. I paid, signed, etc. and the doctors were just reviewing stuff with me prior to surgery. They pulled up my CT scan from over a month ago (for the first time...) and were shocked. It showed a huge mass/abscess in my lung and they decided that it was likely that I had a very serious and fatal fungal disease. It was too risky and complicated to do at the current...

Goals Met and Not Met for 2023

December 18th, 2023 at 05:29 AM by Lucky Robin

So, in 2023 I set some goals for myself and thought it would be interesting to come back and see if I hit any of them.  I know things went all catywampus because no one expected the bathroom to suddenly develop black mold and have to be torn out to the studs and be treated and us to have to save up all year and part of into next year to pay for a contractor to come and build a new one.  The bathroom fund took up most of our money, but did we meet any of our goals? ...

Big Picture Updates

December 18th, 2023 at 12:37 AM by Monkey Mama

**Retirement balance is back up to $500K+, or where it was 2 years prior.
New retirement goal is still on pause.  Should probably circle back now that we have college sorted out.  Still feeling somewhat "meh" about it re: too many future unknowns.
**I noticed last week that our net worth was up $60K for the year.  This was before stock market spike this week.  (Now up $70K).  ~$50K is my general goal and I am happy with where we are at, but...

Funds

December 17th, 2023 at 02:11 PM by Flordemaga

I met my savings/emergency fund goal for the month of December thanks to a pay out at work for opting out of health insurance. I am hoping to meet my monthly savings goals, but I know life gets in the way sometimes. The ultimate savings goal is $100K, but this amount will assure me that I will have enough to cover a major home repair, purchase a car with cash and cover emergency expenses in the future. I'm getting closer to the half way mark.

Christmas Bonus, Retirement, and Net Worth

December 17th, 2023 at 12:22 AM by Lucky Robin

DH got his Christmas bonus this on Friday and it was $911.64.  Before taxes it was $1200.  Not as good as last year, so the company must not have done as well.  Either that or they will be distributing a larger portion in stock shares this year.  I hope so.  DH worked his tail off in overtime this year so his percentage of hours worked is high and the portion of shares you get is based on the percentage of hours you work.  We've got a fairly large...

Mid Month Check In

December 15th, 2023 at 11:34 AM by Amber

Great news!
With today’s payment of $300.27 ($85.27 applied to interest) towards my student loan, I am finally able to get this loan under $30,000. My new balance is $29,985.00. Of course within a few days it will creep back up to $30,000, it just feels good to see it under my goal amount, even if it’s just for a few days. 😀

I made my first mortgage payment for 2024, adding an extra $60, the new loan balance is $106,083.00. My escrow balance is $676.65,...

A bit more...

December 15th, 2023 at 02:31 AM by Flordemaga

I paid off two homes with one of those homes generating income. In the process of paying the houses off, I became cash poor. I am  steadedly building up the emergency fund and savings. I have no regrets getting rid of the mortgages; I sleep well at night in knowing that I can pay my living expenses on a minimum wage house. I am grateful for all the things I have and make it a point to pay it forward.

The Most Wonderful News :)

December 14th, 2023 at 09:43 PM by Petunia 100

Yesterday I received the most wonderful news.   My son and daughter-in-law are expecting!!  I am over the moon with excitement and happiness.  If I had any lingering doubt that I made the right decision to uproot my life and head to Illinois, it is gone now.

Bonus & Mortgage Update

December 14th, 2023 at 02:19 PM by Monkey Mama

Bonus ended up being smaller than last year.  No complaints.  I received OT (paid out as a lump sum every year) at my last job.  Was usually $5K+.  Have settled into $5K+ annual bonus at current job too.  (Usually $5K but sometimes higher.)  The nice thing is that I don't have to work any OT but still continue to get a lump sum annually.  I like the end of the year bonus re: taxes.  For now, my tax withholding is mostly non-existent and I...

Christmas Spending

December 13th, 2023 at 11:11 PM by CB in the City

I have been deep into Christmas spending.  I have spent $857, out of a budget of $1000. I am mostly done. I still have to buy the supplies for Christmas dinner (which will actually be on the 17th because of scheduling conflicts). I also need to buy something for GS1's girlfriend, who will be at our Christmas Eve gift opening. I'm thinking maybe an Ulta gift card? I've only met her once. She definitely seems to be a girly girl.
Other expenses have been pretty regular. I did...
