MM(20) Gifted college Fund

March 8th, 2024 at 02:41 PM by Monkey Mama

This is a Part 2 re: my last post.  Realized I should have mentioned this with that post.
I am enjoying actually making interest on our cash. The 'Gifted College Fund' interest covered all of MM's college expenses during his junior year.
Interest received this school year: $950
Net Tuition Paid (after tax credits): $743
Class supplies purchased separately:  $185
In the end, interest will roughly equal costs this school year.
(I actually skipped a $241...

dad's passing

March 7th, 2024 at 05:51 AM by LivingAlmostLarge

Again warning please don't read if you don't want to hear about death.
So my dad passed away this morning between the hours of 4 am - 6 am.  My mom finally went to bed at around 4 am.  She was exhausted after sitting with him pretty much all times.  She really wanted to be there holding his hand for his last breathe.  But she just couldn't stay up 24/7.
But also my dad had transitioned to the hospice definition of "imminent" on Friday morning. ...

College 2023 - 2024 ✔

March 6th, 2024 at 04:42 PM by Monkey Mama

The last week (er, two weeks) have been a whirlind.  Mostly good things.  MM(20) visited for dinner Friday night (over one week ago), we went to GMIL's 99th birthday party that Saturday, and MH got home from his trip that Sunday night.  I paid off the travel credit card bill.  We ended up using exactly that $3K gift money to cover the cost.  (The goal was to cover a chunk of the costs.  It's just gravy that it covered everything.)  More details...

Brunette Getting Out of Debt

New Goal

March 5th, 2024 at 09:05 PM by Brunette Getting Out of Debt

I have a new goal for my debt... I'm kind of excited about it!
Now that my debt is a more manageable $10.000 instead of $25,000, (still a lot, but we are making progress!) I want to find money every month to pay an additional 1% of our debt.
I know that doesn't sound like much, but I believe every little bit helps and any extra money thrown towards our debt will help us to get out of debt faster. Each month the extra money can come from anywhere. If I am able to whittle...

Health Update #2

March 4th, 2024 at 02:08 PM by klarose

Got the heart cath. I do have a significant blockage but unfortunately, they were unable to place the stent. They found a blood clot in my heart during the procedure and had to stop because they were afraid of dislodging and causing a pulmonary embolism.
I am on eliquis for the next three months and then they will try again. It was over $400 for a one-month supply after insurance...
If the blood clot is still there again, they will have to stop and I will have to go to...

taxes

March 2nd, 2024 at 05:27 PM by Good Living

I prefer using a tax preparer because I don't want to deal with the stress. A couple of years ago our preparer died just before tax season, it was weird another reminder of my own aging. I had used him for probably at least 20 years. Through some networking we found another one who has been wonderful and even costs less, they are an attorney as well. She is younger so I hope we can use her through the rest of our days.
So we have a big refund due the liquidating of my sick...

Other Assets:

I added my VIN to Monarch & got a vastly different car value than the one estimated from Credit Karma. Interesting. I really don't look at my car like true asset, but it does have value. However, if I had to replace my...

Payday(s)

March 1st, 2024 at 06:47 PM by Brunette Getting Out of Debt

Payday was yesterday (for me) and today (for my husband). I feel like we made some good strides this week.
We sent about $650 towards our credit card and stuffed a lot of envelopes this week. We are still dealing with car drama from our car being stolen. (It was found but was in really bad shape. Seats were written on with sharpees, all four sides of the outside had some sort of damage, etc. It was like they played bumber cars with our car!) Due to the car situation, we stuffed...

February 2024 net worth update

March 1st, 2024 at 04:08 PM by ceejay74

It was an exciting month for net worth! NT got an inheritance from his grandma that enabled us to pay off our HELOC ($30K), I checked our rental property value and it's currently $30K higher than I had it valued at, we paid off another $2K or so of mortgage principal, and our retirement accounts went up about $25K. All told, we gained nearly $89K in net worth and our assets are $1700 away from hitting $2 million!

Logging Miles

March 1st, 2024 at 12:32 AM by Monkey Mama

Apparently I gave up monthly updates in November.  That tracks.  My employer went on a weeks-long Europe trip in December and so the 'worst deadline' (the least forgiving) was shortened by a couple of weeks.  😩  Had to get everything done by 12/15 instead of 12/31.  Since then, it's just the 'tax season' flow of my job, everyone's medical dramas, and mostly being out of town.
I just wanted to jot down miles (it's easy to reference here) but didn't realize...

Milestones met

February 29th, 2024 at 04:00 PM by Dido

My annual bonus landed in my accounts today.  With that, I've hit a couple of financial targets--Net Worth hit the next $100k target, and debt decreased to about 69k.  After I file my taxes and get my refund I should be able to lower the debt a bit more.
The last time I hit one of these 100k net worth targets was in June, so it only took 8 months to add the next 100k.
The more you have, the faster the increases come.

Had to have a colonoscopy and endoscopy done tuesday...the staff were amazing I tend to get sensory overload when it comes to noise and lights and they saw that i was starting to struggle...

the transition stage

February 27th, 2024 at 09:51 PM by LivingAlmostLarge

I apologize in advance for writing about death.  Please skip if you do not want to hear.
So yesterday the hospice nurse came and put my dad on transition.  That means she said he has another 10-14 days.  She wasn't quite sure he was there since he's doing quite "well".  He's definitely starting the decline, but death is something hard to predict.  Also things can take a turn for the worse quickly and he could go into "imminent" death.  I decided...

Financial Growth

February 27th, 2024 at 07:13 PM by Brunette Getting Out of Debt

I have been blogging on here since 2020, but I blogged on a google site for a few years before that and I kept a financial journal even longer than that. Recently, I was cleaning up some documents in my financial folder and I found my old e-journal. It was from 2015 and even though I don’t feel like we’ve had any growth in our financial situation, I can now see that we have.
These are some snippets from where we stood about 9 years ago:
We haven’t had enough...

Hump Day

February 27th, 2024 at 06:40 PM by Dido

"Hump day" usually refers to Wednesday as the middle of the week, but for me, it was yesterday, which was probably one of the busiest days I will have at work all year.
At the beginning of the year, we get a bunch of what I refer to as "administratrivia" tasks to do--preparing tax letters for clients, in which we tell them which tax forms to expect based on the assets they have under management, and reminding them of tax-related transactions that might not be reflected fully on...
