I hate being cash poor

August 21st, 2024 at 01:11 AM by Single Guy

Warning: First World Problem whining about to start.
Well this is sure no fun.  I came into this year knowing things would be a little tight, but figured I would be ok with my finances.   The tightness is due to doing a large Roth conversion in January, and then I would have my Tesla loan payments, and there are property taxes here in Virginia, but I figured I could take a bit from savings to make it work.
Have you ever heard of go-go, then no-go, years? ...

finally!!

August 20th, 2024 at 04:55 AM by mumof2

Well I had trouble getting on this page and the tech people on here did an awesome job of fixing the issue so thankyou very much, I really appreciate it!!
Can't believe we are midway through august already this year is flying by so fast, our first priority is looking for a new rental, the market is slim and over priced and 3 that we looked at had water damage so I won't even apply as we don't know if they will actually fix the damage. So we have applied for some, rejected some,...

Good Living

Summer didn't turn out as we thought it might

August 19th, 2024 at 09:08 PM by Good Living

We finally got the AC repaired and it did cost us a little extra. We were fine with that but also we've been spending time in another state with my elderly mom. She's been having health issues that might impact her ability to live independently. I have a sibling there who works full time and is also working on a doctorate degree.
We did buy our van, set it up and took a brief trip but otherwise we've used it while we've been out of state with my mom. We thought we might...

Major Flooding Here

August 18th, 2024 at 10:36 PM by PatientSaver

We had torrential rain all day today and now, half the roads in town (including the interstate and other state highways) are closed or washed out. The meandering river that flows through the heart of town is now a force to be reckoned with; I do believe one storefront may have to be torn down as the water overflowed the river banks and the structure, as seen from drone footage someone took, appears now to be IN the river.I'm seeing cars floating in what was the road, abandoned...

Changes Afoot

August 17th, 2024 at 05:32 PM by Dido

Well, the company I work for was acquired yesterday.  Our name and the website change on Monday.  We'll be getting new computers too--instead of a regular PC with the ability to log into a virtual desktop from a device at home, I'll get a laptop and will need to lug it home or elsewhere if I want to work other than onsite.
The new company has different health insurance and different 401(k) plans, so there will be a lot of administratrivia and paperwork changing those. ...

New Refrigerator

August 17th, 2024 at 03:20 PM by CB in the City

My refrigerator died. It was here when I moved in ten years ago, and I don't know how old it was then, but it clearly wasn't new. So I don't think it owed me anything. It died in two stages -- one false alarm and then the final demise. Both times I had to rescue food -- and some I lost -- but I did manage to save most of it by storing it with friends/family.
Then of course I had to replace the fridge. This was not easy, as the space that accommodates it is unusually short. There...

Summer Check In

August 15th, 2024 at 02:11 PM by Monkey Mama

MIL was trying to outlast my kids, but she gave up.  We took over the camp account and I put down a $100 deposit for next summer.  We did let one cabin go.  It's now freed up for a younger family.
It was 55F degrees on the beach day.  I tried to talk some of the kids out of it (we needed two cars to get them all to the beach), but they wouldn't hear of it.  They had grand sand castle plans (pictured above).  I thought the picture was a good symbol...

Sunday this and that

August 12th, 2024 at 12:12 AM by PatientSaver

Well, this is entirely not money-related, but I do feel a great sense of accomplishment/satisfaction since I was able to basal bark treat 4 small tree of heaven saplings. Tree of heaven is one of just 2 plants i can think of that absolutely must be treated with an herbicide to eradicate. I learned this the hard way; each time I cut it down, it not only came back, but several more sprung up in the vicinity.
So that makes a total of 10 tree of heaven saplings I've been able to treat...

Shady Furniture Sales? 🛋️ 🪑

August 11th, 2024 at 02:34 AM by terri77

So are furniture salespeople as shady as car salespeople? Because I've never had a car salesman add on so much, or upgrade my selections like I had happen to me today. I didn't realize that I needed to scrutinize my receipt so closely. If I had I would turned right around. I'm really upset as it adds up to over $700 in overcharges by adding furniture protection contracts & upgrading a sofa from what I selected in store.  This isn't my first time purchasing furniture. I've...

Plumbing emergency

August 6th, 2024 at 09:50 PM by PatientSaver

I brought my father to physical therapy this morning, then took him out to lunch afterwards. I drove back home around 2 pm. When I walked in the front door, my cat immediately began meowing to be fed, and when I walked into the kitchen, there was a funny noise coming from the basement that sounded a little different.
Wondering if either my central air or my new heat pump hot water heater was malfunctioning, I went into the basement to find about half the basement floor covered...

Stretching $4,107 for 6 weeks

August 2nd, 2024 at 11:43 PM by PatientSaver

All of the high cost bills I mentioned recently have been paid, save for the paint job of the garage ceiling ($366), which will happen next week. My taper finished retaping it today, so not only has that bill been paid, but also my car, homeowners and umbrella policies and my property taxes. I used two different agents to try to get better prices fo the home/auto policies, but in the end, my current policies were more affordable. They had risen substantially, but apparently not...

The Allure of Even Numbers

August 2nd, 2024 at 02:52 PM by Dido

I couldn't help myself.  I did something I know is irrational.
When checking my mortgage balance this morning, I saw that $43.24 remained to the next thousand-dollar incrediment.
I had over $13 in rewards on a credit card at the same bank, so I applied $13.24 to the mortgage and then paid an additional $30 from cash to get the mortgage balance to $27,000 once all the payments settle.
I also have $8,500 on a HELOC, so total housing related debt is $35,500.
The HELOC interest...

what are you waiting for?

August 1st, 2024 at 12:12 AM by LivingAlmostLarge

What are you waiting for?  Life waits for no one.  It's been a fast year.  I can't believe it's already August and so much has happened.
My old coworker who sold me the subaru impreza?  She had a stroke two friday's ago paralyzing the left side of her body. She's been in the hospital and I went to see her for five minutes.  She's unable to walk and talk at this time.  She's 88 years old.  I had chatted with her earlier in the week about getting...

July 2024 net worth update & Social Security considerations

July 31st, 2024 at 05:01 PM by ceejay74

We had a modest month of retirement fund growth and are still on track with CoastFIRE! I also had a mini-revelation a few weeks ago that we may be a lot more set than I realized. I haven't factored Social Security benefits at all into my calculations; I'm a bit of a pessimist when it comes to thinking about whether it'll still be a thing when I'm of age. But I checked our benefits out of curiosity and saw that the combined benefit of our three accounts could be $4,200 if we start...

I did it. I'm all grown up now.

July 29th, 2024 at 11:09 PM by PatientSaver

Tonight was my little presentation to the local Rotary Club chapter to talk about a group I've been volunteering with, the aim being convincing them to partner with us on an upcoming litter cleanup event, which is what we do.
Now, I need to give you a bit of history. All my life I've been petrified of public speaking. I guess it all started in high school when I had to give little presentations of one sort or another. I would turn beet red, sweat and even my voice would shake...

looking for rentasl & other musings

July 29th, 2024 at 03:34 PM by mumof2

We have been looking for rentals and they are so over priced it is ridiculous...but I have also noticed how many have exclusions on their properties of what you can use and not use....which I would never rent...if Im renting a property I want to rent the entire property not just parts of it especially since you are over charging for it... and they usually only have 1 open....so we were suppose to see a nice house today but hubby had an eye appointment (has to have a needle in his...
