Homesteading Choices Coming Up

April 28th, 2020 at 11:07 PM by Lucky Robin

One thing I am really lamenting is that I didn't go to the library on the last day before it was closed. I have run out of library books to read and you can't read Kindle in the bathtub. Well, you can, but I'd rather not risk it. Chris pulled out the few books he has in the house and one of them both interested me and had large enough print for me to read. I think a trip to storage is in order for the weekend. There are plenty of books there that I would be happy to reread...

Saving, Paying Debt and Working

April 28th, 2020 at 04:37 PM by Amber

Well this month was a busy/spendy grocery month. I’ll finalize my spending for the month on Saturday, but I’m sure it’s my grocery budget that took a hit.

I ended up having almost $600 extra in my checking account so I paid, $337 on CC10. The goal is to save until this pandemic is over, and I’ve been doing so, but it felt good to pay a little extra, not as much as I’d like, on this credit card.

Friday is pay day, I’m throwing, $1000 to the emergency fund,...

Street Sweeping Again

April 28th, 2020 at 12:37 PM by CB in the City

It's another street-sweeping day -- the other side of the street. Of course, I'm parked on the wrong side again and so must move my car. I'll drive it around a bit to give it some exercise but I don't plan to do any errands today. Just going to let the month play out....

I did some laundry yesterday, and will do a load today, also. No cooking to do today (other than warming up). I guess I'm really on top of things! I'm still quite well stocked and I can put off shopping...

Smallsteps

all in the wording.

April 28th, 2020 at 03:36 AM by Smallsteps

So my daughter works for a very large grocery retailer the topic of masks come to mind. Due to a medical condition it is very hard for DD to breathe wearing a mask for long periods of time. They excused her from it now a week plus later they say it is Required... so we looked into it ..
According to OSHA to make required.... the business is required to pay for medical clearances and Provide clean masks for each shift.

The mask they passed out and ask staff to wash...

My English Castle

Devastating Totals

April 28th, 2020 at 03:28 AM by My English Castle

A friend from Minnesota has an elderly mom in a care facility there where now 17 people have died of COVID, while another's mom is across town where another 18 have died. The numbers in those care facilities are just staggering. Please keep these folk in your thoughts and prayers while the arguments for and against quarantine continue.

We spent nothing today, and my garden seeds have arrived. Tomorrow the hair scissors come. I'm busy busy teaching and trying to keep my...

Good Experience at the Tire Place

April 28th, 2020 at 01:59 AM by Buendia

I waited kind of a long time to get my snow tires off... but I finally made an appointment for this morning at a place I've been going to since I moved here 27 years ago.

They know me, and so I didn't feel uncomfortable asking if I could drive my car onto the thingy (what is that thingy called?) instead of having someone in my car. He said sure!

It was actually sort of fun, and they guided me onto it. Then I drove it back off. I waited outside while they did the work...

Terrain Theory

It's a message that is missing from this conversation. Our individual health matters much more than the actions of others around us. I welcome the opportunity to be part of those that get the virus to create community immunity. My husband thinks he had it in the middle of February, and if so, I did not come down with anything after being exposed.

May you all be well!

stocks and meal planning and reopening

April 27th, 2020 at 11:43 PM by LivingAlmostLarge

I sold two fridays ago and locked in some gains. I bought like $2k of shorts on dow jones and SP. Today i bought however VOO and QQQ, not sure which way it's going. I cashed out the kids and locked in gains for a bit. I want to see where the market is headed.

That being said we're having lasagna tonight with homemade bolognase sauce I made in slow cooker overnight. Last week I made curry. My kids are done with curry, stew, and chili. I think this week I'm making loco moco,...

Where Are the Masks?

April 27th, 2020 at 07:54 PM by CB in the City

Yesterday I took a walk on the access road that goes beside the lake. There were too many people on it, and I had to keep zigzagging to avoid getting too close to others. All in all, it was more stressful than it was worth -- but it was nice to see the lake. So blue and calm!

At least half of the people I saw were not wearing masks, which was disheartening. In our state they are now required. It may be that they are not required for outdoor use -- I'm not sure about that...

Tired, but a Good Tired

April 27th, 2020 at 05:21 AM by Lucky Robin

I have done so much work in the garden the past three days I am practically falling down exhausted at bed time. But I've got my peas, carrots, and radishes planted, a lot of weeding done, and tackled the overgrown climbing rose bushes today. That was a major chore and I got my fair share of thorns poked into me, but it looks so much better and the blooms this year should be outstanding. That took me three hours to do.

Tomorrow I want to work on the potato planting area and...

Canceled our Summer Trip

April 26th, 2020 at 11:19 PM by Buendia

We were supposed to be leaving on May 29th for Europe; even if things open up we all decided that we did not want to be on a plane, or traveling, or far from home. So we canceled our summer trip, and I'm super sad.

The good news is that we are not out any money.

- Plane tickets - United put the miles back in my mom's account (she gave us the miles) and also is crediting our credit card for taxes/fees. This was a straight cancel, not rebook or delay. I am super thankful...

Good News Then Bad News

April 26th, 2020 at 09:39 PM by VS-from-oz

It seems like whenever there is good news lately it’s immediately followed by bad news lately.. for example I had an idea with my business and got my client to agree to it (officially signing up my services and signing an agreement to have regular payments to me direct debited), then the day after I found out the cat was dying.

Sooo.. last Tuesday I spoke with the client and we arranged to meet the next day (social distancing of course). I had been in contact backwards and...

April Check in

April 26th, 2020 at 06:13 PM by latestart

Still working form home. Still not liking working from home. Since I really do not have a desk, I am working my kitchen table. When I work at the office I felt cut off from people since I work in my own office. Now I really feel cut off. I also feel I am not as productive working form home.

Since there is so much uncertainty, I put my stimulus money into my savings account. My planned vacation was cancelled.

Popcorn Report

April 26th, 2020 at 12:50 PM by CB in the City

I made popcorn yesterday with fresh kernels -- Pop Secret Jumbo Popping Corn -- and it turned out great! So it was the popcorn, not the popcorn popper. That's a relief! I wonder why there is so much bad popcorn out there. I have had a lot of bad luck with it.

I took a walk yesterday to the one tiny library that is still operating. I returned six books and took away five books, which are all sitting in quarantine right now. They are an assortment of mysteries, thrillers...

Starting Year 5

April 26th, 2020 at 02:16 AM by Laura

DH and I celebrated our 4th anniversary on Thursday. It was a really good day. I took off from work a few hours early. Then we drove to Glenwood, Iowa and got carryout from our favorite Mexican restaurant and then went to a nearby park to eat.

DH surprised me with flowers, a really sweet note in a card, and ... (long story) he bought himself a wedding ring. Overall, since we had our CA trip in September, things have been going much better. And in the last few weeks, even better....

Are you making a list?

April 25th, 2020 at 06:41 PM by DK62565

After watching the news, both local and national, and reading stuff online, I often wonder how the food supply is going to hold up. There were stories where dairy farms were dumping milk and Florida farmers were plowing under crops because they could not get their products to market. More recently many of the meat processing plants have had to close due to Covid 19 cases and I read an article in the Chicago Tribune last night where some of the places that do the actual butchering...

Yesterday's Spending

April 25th, 2020 at 01:03 PM by CB in the City

I mailed the book package to BFF yesterday, including a couple of extra books because there was room in the box. It cost $11 to print off a label. I also refilled a prescription for $20 -- went through the drive-through.

In bigger news, my DIL accepted the offer of my stimulus payment to go to into her business. She had to talk it over with her partners first, hence the delay. I sent it yesterday by Zelle. It feels so good to do this! She is so grateful.

Our lockdown...

very frustrated

April 25th, 2020 at 02:52 AM by mumof2

Things are starting to frustrate me lately...hubby has had 7 sessions of radiotherapy..he also has copd (has for years) so last year he almost died from pnemonia as they just couldn't clear it and now we are pretty sure that with his immune system being bombarded he has bronchitis which always turn into pnuemonia...so we have managed to find him a doctor to see today and can hopefully get on top of it it is the last thing we need right now...fingers crossed!!
