OMG wish the IRS would do it's job!!

January 10th, 2022 at 02:49 PM by mumof2

I am by no means an expert...damn I'm rarely understand your taxes over there and yet the IRS seems more confused than me about what is going on with our taxes after an hour on the phone still no progress only a note put on our account and then transferred me to someone who said they couldn't help me and transferred me back and said I had to wait 30-60 minutes...sorry I'm on my cell phone and just sat there talking to you for an hour I'm not waiting again. So a little back story...we...

Net Worth Update 2021

January 9th, 2022 at 03:55 PM by Monkey Mama

I am just going to mix in current commentary with prior year commentary.
2020:  +$104,000
2021:  +$215,000  🤯
2020:  We paid down the mortgage by $10,000, purchased a newer vehicle, and the rest was stock market contributions and gains.
2021:  We paid down the mortgage by $20,000, cash/investments up $75,000, and the rest is real estate gains.  I mentioned in a recent post that real estate values have been pretty stagnant since the recession...

Taxes (Almost) Done

January 9th, 2022 at 03:42 PM by Monkey Mama

Feeling productive today.  Got our taxes mostly done.  Is generally how I handle it.  Just get everything entered and then double check that tax forms match my records, as those forms come in.  Try to file before February.
I really miss the professional work software and how much time it saved me.  I've just been throwing tax projections into last year's software and then mentally tweaking what I know is different for the next year. It's not great but...

It's a Wrap, the 2021 Numbers Are In

January 9th, 2022 at 07:11 AM by Amber

After balancing my final account, I've been waiting on the statement, the numbers are in. Sadly, overall I spent 14% more than the previous year( 2020).

First, my savings accounts increased by $6789.87; liabilities went up by $2400.07. Last month I used the CC for dental work, I'll be paying it off this month, I wanted to use the CC for points, that equal cash.

I paid off $15,429.81 in student loans; decreased the mortgage by $3455.10, and my net worth increased...

January Update

January 9th, 2022 at 01:42 AM by Baroque

Happy New Year!
Fiscally speaking, we are on an upward trend.  I'm participating in UFMC and the only items purchased so far are printer paper and highlighters (outside of gas and groceries).  Youngest son needs a new winter coat and is now man-sized so I'm hoping to find something suitable at Kohl's where I can use a coupon and store credit toward the purchase.
Work is a beast - I'm still in the special ed 3rd/4th grade class (behavior issues and emotional problems). ...

Payday Report for 1/7/22

January 8th, 2022 at 03:07 AM by Lucky Robin

As a reminder, I run a zero based budget, which means every dollar is accounted for within the budget.  Garbage is higher than the usual because we put out two extra cans in December.
DS does not get an allowance this payday, because he still owes me money from not having quite enough money from everyone to buy the one thing he wanted, so I loaned it to him.  DS will get some allowance next payday, but I am not sure if it will be the full amount.  I've got the number...

Emergency Fund--Getting There Soon

January 7th, 2022 at 11:13 PM by Lucky Robin

Today I was able to make a decent deposit to the Emergency Fund, since there was some overtime on DH's paycheck.  Plus we are at the new rate.  We also recieved his Louisianna Pacific dividend check of 58 cents, so that went in there, too.  You laugh, but at the end of the first quarter that check was only 42 cents.  I also had $17.50 in the coin jar.  So with what came from payday which was 349.29, I had $363.37 to put into the EF this week.
$19,316.62...

2021 wrap up

January 7th, 2022 at 08:26 PM by LivingAlmostLarge

2021 was an interesting year for us in so many ways.  Financially we did well even with a paycut.  Our net worth went up about $500k.  We paid off 2% of our mortgage or about $15k.  We refinanced to a 7 year arm at 2% in June.  We currently pay ~$1400/month to rent our house and ~$1800 in principal.  We saved about 45% of our income even after the paycut.  DH and I both started our own companies and not working for the man.  I'm self-employed...

Extra tax bill - ouch

January 6th, 2022 at 01:18 AM by Steve

Two of our taxable mutual funds paid out particularly large year-end distributions. Along with other taxable investment income, it came to about 46K, as I said in my last post.
I sent that info to our CPA and he ran our numbers and we need to pay over 10K in taxes. We need to pay at least $9,400 by 1/18 to avoid an underpayment penalty.
We have the funds, so that's not an issue. I just wasn't anticipating a 10K bill.
I did log in tonight and turn off reinvestment of dividends...

Weather, Catching the Flu, and Losing Weight

January 5th, 2022 at 12:02 AM by Lucky Robin

The snow has finally melted, except for chunks here and there from the snow plows.  It's nice to see the green world again, but it's supposed to start sleeting tonight and turn to snow in the wee hours and snow all day tomorrow, then sleet for two days, then one sunny day and then rain for two days.  I don't mind the rain, it's the snow and the extreme cold I don't like.  Hopefully this will mean winter is over until February, where if we are going to get hit hard...

2022 Goals!

January 4th, 2022 at 05:26 PM by FocusedinmyForties

I wrote this post yesterday, and when I went to submit, the site had eaten my post, and I could not get it back.  Oh well.  This will probably be a shorter version than what I originally wrote lol.
Key:  Goal - timing.  Context
Financial Goals (in order of priority):
1.  Pay off 401k Loan #1 - mid January.  The balance on this loan is just under $1500, and will be paid off with part of the tuition reimbursement payment I am receiving on my next...

CB in the City

Whoops!

January 4th, 2022 at 02:29 PM by CB in the City

I didn't log my upcoming auto insurance payment into my budget spreadsheet.  I don't know why -- I knew it was coming, but I just didn't enter it.  So when it hit the bank account this morning, it left a balance that was surprising. I'm okay, just have to adjust my mind a little bit, as well as the spreadsheet.  My semiannual insurance payment is $747 -- quite expensive.  Older driver in a high-density setting.
I've been doing well on my resolutions. ...

bills paid for the month

January 4th, 2022 at 05:49 AM by mumof2

I love the beginning of the month I can pay all our bills and then not have to worry about them...then every fortnight we will take out our grocery and gas money...we use to use cash as it was easier to be in control of but with covid so rampant here and doing more ordering online we decided to open up an account just for groceries and gas so we can keep it seperate from everything else....we also only have $300 left to put into the ice account for the month (to reach my monthly...

Preparing for a move

January 3rd, 2022 at 08:32 PM by Penny

Today was a snow day, so DW and I spent the late morning doing inventory for our upcoming international move. It took several hours to do this, glad we got it done with. While doing inventory I decided to do some cooking . I made tomato soup, grilled cheese, and hummus with jicama. I love using up food in the house, makes me feel good! We have to eat up our kitchen and pantry as we can't ship any food products with us. Whatever we don't use I'll bring over to my DD's place, but...

It's snowing and other updates

January 3rd, 2022 at 04:34 PM by Wink

It’s snowing! This is the first snow of the year here and I’m glad to be able to stay at home and enjoy the beauty. It went from 65 degrees yesterday to 32 degrees today with wind and snow. Crazy!

I hope everyone enjoyed the holiday season, I had a wonderful time celebrating Christmas with my family, and a quiet New Year. I’m busy now taking down the decorations and packing them away for next year.

Quick Check In

January 3rd, 2022 at 03:29 PM by Monkey Mama

I am happy how 2021 shook our financially and have done some tax projections and updated my sidebar for 2022 goals (basically same as always).
I will delve deeper when I have some time.
Just popped on the computer this morning to execute some rebalancing trades.  The *one* thing I had to get done before today was I usually just do a Morningstar X ray to get a snapshot of our investments and returns for the year.  I mean, it take a couple of minutes for tons of...
