Is The Post Office Closed On Thanksgiving 2025?

Thanksgiving is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November, which in 2025 falls on November 27. While the holiday is best known for family gatherings, turkey dinners, and the kickoff of holiday shopping with Black Friday and Cyber Monday, many people also wonder about mailing packages during this busy season. So, is the post office open on Thanksgiving?

Is The Post Office Closed on Thanksgiving?

Yes. Since Thanksgiving is a federal holiday, all USPS locations will be closed on Thursday, November 27, 2025. No regular mail delivery or retail services will be available.

Priority Mail Express is the only USPS service that will still operate, ensuring urgent packages can be delivered even on the holiday. You can still drop eligible mail (items up to ½ inch thick or weighing 10 ounces or less) in USPS collection boxes. These will be processed once service resumes on Friday.

USPS online services remain available 24/7, allowing you to schedule pickups, order supplies, and track packages.

What About Black Friday?

Good news: Post offices reopen on Black Friday, November 28, 2025, since it is not a federal holiday. That means you won’t have to wait long to send out your holiday packages after Thanksgiving.

Are FedEx and UPS Open on Thanksgiving?

No. FedEx and UPS also close on Thanksgiving Day. Both carriers suspend most operations, though critical express deliveries may still occur. Normal service resumes on Black Friday, so you can ship packages right after the holiday.

Post Office Holiday Schedule for 2025

Thanksgiving isn’t the only day USPS closes. In 2025, the post office will observe 11 federal holidays:

  • New Year’s Day (Jan 1)
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Day (Jan 20)
  • Presidents Day (Feb 17)
  • Memorial Day (May 26)
  • Juneteenth National Independence Day (Jun 19)
  • Independence Day (Jul 4)
  • Labor Day (Sep 1)
  • Columbus Day (Oct 13)
  • Veterans Day (Nov 11)
  • Thanksgiving Day (Nov 27)
  • Christmas Day (Dec 25)

If a holiday falls on a Sunday, USPS typically observes it on the following Monday.

UPS Holiday Closures

UPS closes on fewer holidays than USPS. In 2025, UPS will shut down only on:

  • New Year’s Day
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Day
  • Independence Day
  • Thanksgiving Day
  • Christmas Day

So, if you’re planning to ship gifts or cards around Thanksgiving 2025, make sure to send them before November 27 or be ready to wait until November 28 when services resume. With holiday shipping deadlines approaching fast, planning ahead will help ensure your packages arrive on time.

What’s on your Thanksgiving agenda this year—family dinner, Black Friday shopping, or maybe both?
