How Do You Improve Your Website Security?

June 29, 2020 by Susan Paige

Cybercrime and fraud have been on the increase in the recent past. Consequently, it is imperative for any business owner to beef-up website security to be safe from the bad guys. For instance, installing a reliable antivirus can create a secure barrier between your website and malware attacks. McAfee review by Harry Brown recommends an antivirus that has an inbuilt firewall to withstand web-attacks efficiently. A reliable antivirus will offer your website modest malware protection against spyware, phishing, spam mails, trojans, and rootkit. In other words, get something that gives you 100% security and guaranteed protection against malware attacks.

If you are in business, improving your website’s security comes in handy in many ways. That way, you’ll avoid unwanted litigations as website visitors are assured of privacy and data protection. You’ll retain more customers as you earn their trust. You’ll also receive more traffic, which will improve your conversion rate.

So, in what ways can you improve your website’s security? Well, they include but aren’t limited to the following.

Use a Secure Host

The first step of beefing up security should involve choosing a reliable and reputable host devoted to your website’s security. Instead of just focusing on price and dubious features, get a web host that offers unique security mitigations like Content Delivery Networks (CDN). CDNs will absorb any resource-heavy attack channeled to multiple websites from the central servers, like Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS). Remember, a threat doesn’t have to emanate from your end remotely, but your web host can also be targeted.

Login pages encryption

Anecdotal accounts from giant companies that have experienced cyber threats and attacks document that most attacks emanate from the login pages. We advise that you use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) encryption protocol on all your login pages. That way, all the typed data will be transmitted in a coded language that will be meaningless to anyone who tries to intercept it. Moreover, Google now recognizes SSL protocol, and if you are certified, your website will have an icon of a green padlock for users to see. That way, you’ll earn the trust of many visitors and increase your conversion rate.

Strong Password policy

Hackers are known to use brute-force software to bypass and crack simple passwords. To avoid such an embarrassing attack, we recommend using complex passwords of at least 10 characters long. The password should consist of uppercase numerals, lowercase letters, special characters, and uppercase letters. It would be best if you also sensitized all your employees and administrators about the same.

Update All Software

Lastly, it is also important to regularly update any software that you rely on to run the website. Hi-tech hackers will target security loopholes in outdated software and scripts as they have a more attack surface area. Update all your software and installed scripts to seal any vulnerable entry point such that hackers have to develop a sophisticated attack mechanism before cracking into your web.

However, it is also advisable that you forge a close relationship with security experts for regular vulnerability scans and security audits.

If you are running a giant website, then hiring a security team to monitor malicious activities continually should be your top priority. In brief, don’t make victory easy for the bad guys!
