  • The price of gas

I filled up my tank yesterday $36 $2.01 a gallon for full service at a local no name place. I saw up to $2.09 for a regular. I don't have to fill up that often since I only have to drive a few minutes several times a week.

Have your driving habits changed since gas has gone up so much?

I try to not use the car whenever possible, but I must admit that I haven't changed my driving habits a whole lot. It's probably a good idea for me to think about though.

Rising prices have helped remind me to combine trips and shoot for no-drive days. Those are things I wanted to do anyway, but wasn't making as good an effort as I could have. I'm so glad DH switched jobs when he did. He was filling up at least three times a month before, and now he rides his bike!

My habits have changed a little bit. For instance, if I need something at the Post Office I have my hubby get it(he can walk there from work) instead of me driving down. My middle schooler can ride the bus, but on days I worked I would take him ( a little ways out of my way). So, he started riding the bus everyday.
The bad thing is my 15 year old is learning to drive, and he has to have 40 hours supervised by us. He usually drives whenever we go anywhere, but he has to have certain hours done at night and on the interstate, so sometimes we are driving just to drive. Ugh!

It sounds like we all stick pretty close to home.

Driving for the sake of driving. .. not what I would want to do these days

We used to enjoy taking a drive on the weekend, but not so much anymore. I think about it now if I dive up to the zoo or something, which is about a 50-mile roundtrip.

              Re: The price of gas

I've got a couple tips to save on gas you might be interested in:

              1. Check your air filters and catalytic converters. They should be kept clean. Dirty filters increase fuel consumption by as much as 10%.

              2. Clean out your back seat and trunk and remove unneccessary items from the car. All that extra weight reduces your gas mileage.

              3. When the light turns red, take off smoothly and slowly. You'll gain speed almost as fast as if you punched the accelerator and you'll save wasted gas that pours through your system unused.

Hope those are useful for you!

Do you think gas prices will ever get back to under $2.00 a gallon?

I think they might but just barely. I paid $2.29 for premium last night!

                    Re: The price of gas

                    It's $2.05, but since I spent $100 at Martin's (over 5 weeks) I got 10 cents off a gallon, so filled hubby's car for $1.95/gal.

Yesterday our gas jumped up to $2.49! Than today they went down to $2.39. Don't get it.

Regular at its cheapest around here is $2.37, more like $2.43-$2.46 right now.

                              Re: The price of gas

Currently, Gas in Princeton (central NJ) is around 2.05-2.07 at several of the gas stations I pass on the way to work. About a month ago it was stuck at 2.27 for a couple weeks. When we went to visit my parents in Rochester NY over presidents day weekend, gas was about 2.49 up there.

Everything sounds cheap since I've experienced gas for $3/gallon back at the end of the summer. But work is only about 3-4 miles away... so I only have to fill up about once every 3 weeks to a month. (I have only put 2700 miles on my car since I got it in October, and that includes two 750-mile round trip visits to Rochester). At that rate, I'm not gonna complain about gas prices unless it goes above $4/gallon.
